Deja Vu Part 2
As soon as Graham Nash walked out the door, my thought was to be better prepared. So, I googled them, scrambled to find black sharpees, and pulled out the scrapbook I had made with the Deja Vu cover. I particularly loved making scrapbooks with that cover. The gold embossed lettering, the brown textured cardboard, and the sepia photo of the group had the look and feel of a scrapbook. I had fixtures outside in the arcade, and I put one one on end of the fixture. It was Cinco de Mayo and I could see they were putting a buffet out for the group and crew across the way in Convention Hall. I stood all day outside the store wondering if they would come through the arcade. Sure enough, a big group to my left was heading towards Convention Hall. And, like magic someone was pointing to my store, and David Crosby looked down and saw the scrapbook. He walked right towards it. As he picked it up, I ran right up to him. He looked at me and said "did you make this?" I said "Yes, it is perfect for making scrapbooks". The important thing is "Do you like it or do you think I am ruining a record cover". And he said that there were at least a million of them out there. He starting telling me, well us, there was a circle of people around us by now. He said this was a very special cover. They had very high standards of what they wanted. He said most bands would be happy to sell a million records. But, it was so costly, all they could think of was the cost of making a million more. So, there is a vast number of different covers. The color of the brown thick paper was hard to match, and the pictures were originally attached by hand. I was hanging on every word. And, I really needed to hear from an Artist what he thought of what I was doing. I looked at him and asked if he would sign it? He said yes! I quickly ran and got a sharpee and he signed it. There was quite a lot of people around and I could tell he was uncomfortable. And, they quickly went in to have their meal. That was an amazing experience. I couldn't wait to go to the computer and learn more about Crosby, Stills and Nash. There are wonderful videos put together by their photographers and they are on You Tube. It's called "Under the Covers". These are amazing journies of the photos and where they took place. I already had an appreciation of record covers, but now I was hooked.
Quote of the day: It's hard to bullshit the ocean. It's not listening, you know what I mean.
